NISE Fellow Opportunities

National Institute for Science Education
College Level One Fellow

The National Institute for Science Education (NISE) at the University of
Wisconsin-Madison has openings for several Fellows interested in
assessment issues in introductory undergraduate science, mathematics,
engineering & technology (SMET) education. Beginning in Fall 1998, NISE
will sponsor annual College Level One (CL-1) Institutes, each year
focusing on a critical issue in the first-year college SMET experience.
These Institutes will be communities of higher education scholars and
SMET faculty who will synthesize ideas, knowledge, tools, and
techniques for effective teaching of SMET subjects. A basic Institute
goal is the broad dissemination of findings to post-secondary faculty and
administrators. The Fellows comprise the intellectual core of the
CL-1 Institutes.

The 1998-99 CL-1 Institute will address issues associated with
assessing student learning in introductory undergraduate SMET courses.
Thus, all Fellows are expected to have a record of scholarly research
and/or extensive classroom practice in this field. Responsibilities of a
Fellow will include: research and writing coordinated with other
Fellows and the NISE CL-1 team to achieve a synthesis of present
knowledge, dissemination tools for national impact, organization of
seminars and symposia, extensive interaction with other Fellows and
NISE members.

Requirements of the position are a doctorate in science, mathematics,
engineering, or education. Possible candidates include (but are not
limited to) faculty who teach SMET courses with experience in
development of assessment tools, education researchers with an
expertise in assessment, and members of faculty development
programs. Typically the tenure of a Fellow will be one year. Residence
at UW-Madison, WI is expected.

Individuals wishing to apply for a CL-1 Institute Fellowship are asked to
submit the following three items:

1) A letter indicating your interests and background in the area of
assessment,

2) A brief budget of salary support needed, and

3) A resume indicating work experience and publication record and the
contact information for at least two references.

Applications are reviewed quarterly by the NISE and the National Science
Foundation. Selection criteria include qualifications of the candidate,
match with the NISE mission, the ability to work collaboratively, and the
ability to produce valuable work in a timely fashion.

Applications should be submitted to:
