Accurate comparisons for ships and barges are difficult since they are
terminal to terminal delivery systems. Trains are too, however there
are
many more terminals with much better geographical coverage. The point

one must get the cargos from the manufacturing/production center to
the
terminal and from the end-terminal to the customer. From the point
of view
of labor, time, and overall cost, it is clear why the trucking
industry
dominates despite poor fuel efficiency. Hybrid systems seem to work
well
(shipping truck trailers by train and ship) and also seem to be cost
effective, but again only when the terminals are sufficiently close to
producers and customers.

do you have similar figures for barges or big ships? They are even
more
impressive.

Not off hand, this will have to wait for the next trip to the big
city
bookstore, or trip to the library to see if they have the book; and
to see
if the book listed figures for those means of conveyance.
