Re: Arbitrary Grades?????

I can confirm Alex Burr's comments on lab finals. My second-semester
lab exam, which includes 4-6 "hands-on" items, is much more work to
administer than the first-semester lab exam, which is purely a written
exam. But creating the lab exam for either semester is harder than
constructing an ordinary exam. (In fact, my lab exams are the only ones
I don't return to the students to keep. Good exam items so difficult to
devise that I end up using many of the same ones repeatedly.)

Lab Finals
I have used lab fuinals for many years. I think they are good.
Students
in general did not like them. They are difficult to administer and
create but only if you make them true LAB finbals, ie the student MUST

measure something. If you only test theory or use made up data it is
not a true lab final.
