Re: Choir acoustics

This seems like a truly excellent project for a physicist.
On the one hand, there is a respectable literature on reverberation,
coloration etc., on the other (it seems to me) a person might achieve
very acceptable results by pragmatic methods.

The first idea that comes to mind is to conduct an impulse test
with a tape recorder ( or a data acquisition setup on a pc...)
"clap hands, here comes Richard..."

Doing a 'compare and contrast ' in this way against a building
of known good acoustics should give you useful ideas about trial
hangings of plywood panels if passive remediation is your fancy,
or ( perhaps less expensively) an audio amp with strategic filtering
and suitable positioning of reinforcement loudspeakers.

Can anyone recommend ways to improve the acoustics for a choir in a
church with a limited budget.

The chapel seats about 400 and they think that the sound is "dead".
Some of the members were told to "ask a physics teacher". So they did.

Anyone got suggestions or people to ask?

Cheers,

Rick
