Re: Arbitrary Grades?????

I give lab quizzes where the students are given a very short time to copy
certain selected information from their lab books. With this technique you
can assess things like significant figures, keeping units, general
organization (can they find the information), proper use of the
instrumentation (precision), and most of the other things you would
normally check by reading lab books. In addition, I collect the lab books
twice a semester and each time grade just one lab. However, the students
don't know which lab I'll choose.

The combination of these two techniques has provided the same general level
of assessment but with considerably less 'grunt' work in larger classes [we
have no grad students to do this kind of work] than my previous method of
grading ALL the labs. I still do grade all the labs in small classes.

Does anyone else have any comments on lab finals?
