PEN environment resources

Perhaps someone can make use of these, from the Sept. 1997 PEN, a
twice-monthly electronic service of the AIP. I don't have time to check
them out...

A CLEAR-CUT EXAMPLE OF COMPUTATIONAL SCIENCE
This may not be physics, but educators and scientists might
benefit from an interesting new computational experiment
examining the effect of clear-cut logging on a nine-species
simulated forest. The peer-reviewed electronic paper by
D. H. Deutschman, et al., which appears in a novel approach
to scientific publishing, can be found in Science Magazine's
Science Online at
www.sciencemag.org/feature/data/deutschman/index.htm.

REPLANTING THE URBAN FOREST
The physics of trees--from the materials and structural
issues related to tree growth, strength, and nutrient transport
to the complex quantum chemistry of photosynthesis--can be
brought to life by having students nurture and study trees.
Such an integrated approach to teaching science is made
easier by Ecology Crossroads, an organization that offers
up to 250 trees to schools and teachers willing to pay for
shipping. More information can be found at
http://www.arborday.com/default.htm.
