Re: Assessment of science programs and courses

The Professional Concerns Committee of the AAPT voted at the Denver meeting
to modify the form originally submitted for soliciting Departmental review
committee members.

The original form sought faculty at the rank of full professor and above
for the conduct of such reviews. It was agreed that this exclusion of a
large portion of the membership of AAPT was unnecessarily restrictive since
the institution seeking reviewers can choose from prospective reviewers to
suit its own needs.

It was agreed that extremely valuable contributions could be made to such a
Departmental appraisal by: (1) pre-college teachers (who prepare the
students who enter colleges, and who know what their former students tell
them about their experiences at colleges), and by (2) Instructional
Resource Specialists (who are familiar with Physics Education Issues
because they oversee lecture demonstration offices, manage laboratories,
oversee tutorial facilities, and run facilities for public understanding of
science).
