I am a teacher at Irvington High School in Fremont, CA and I have
a position to fill in a program to support "at-risk" kids. It is an
exciting new program fueled by the support of many teachers, parents and
students. Please forward this message to anyone who might be interested in

Unique At-Risk Academy
Math/Science Position Available
Irvington High School, Fall 1997
This unusual teaching position with the Irvington Academy Program joins
many cutting edge educational theories and practices to help 50 at-risk
ninth graders. This service and mentorship academy was designed by
teachers, students and parents to serve the diverse needs of at- risk ninth
graders. Students will learn Math, Science, English and Life Skills through
thematic, hands-on units which bring them into the community for service
learning and mentorship. The program is team taught and managed by one
English teacher and one Math/Science teacher.
Teaching Responsibilities
* Two 90 Minute Math/ Science classes
* One planning period to organize volunteer and mentorship
opportunities in the community
* One regular prep period
Student Load
* 50 at-risk ninth graders, age 14 through 17
Curriculum Design
* Integrated Math/Science with a focus on problem solvingand life skills
* Project Based Assignments including work in the Community Garden
* Individualized Assessment through use of portfolio review and exhibition
School Culture
* Comprehensive high school dedicated to school reform
* Diverse student body of 1700 students
* Educational affiliations include: the Coalition of Essential
Schools, Bay Area School

* Awards include: California Distinguished School Award 1993-94 and
