Re: Pycnometer

Hello:

A colleague would like to purchase a pycnometer for accurately measuring

information about these devices and where to possibily purchase them.

Jerry,

I am impressed when I find someone who knows the correct names for things,
and can only assume you also know what a hypsometer is. :-)

But Cenco doesn't. Their catalog doesn't have it in the index anymore, but
it's there--under "specific gravity bottle".

The hypsometer is a pear-shaped bottle with a ground glass stopper with a
hole it. The bottle is filled with liquid and the stopper inserted,
allowing fluid to flow out the hole. Under these conditions, the liquid
contained in the bottle is the calibrated amount. 10 and 25 ml are common.
Prices range from $23 for an unadjusted (uncalibrated) 10ml, to $35 for a
calibrated one.

Store and use these calibrated ones so that the stopper and bottle are
never separated. The stoppers aren't interchangeable, so you don't want to
mix them up if you have several pycnometers.
