Crookes was the discoverer of thallium.
Here too, he did not escape all controversy.
He preceded Lamy by a few months, who also claimed the credit.
Crookesite, the sulphate ore was named for him.

Thallium was named for 'a budding twig' L. because of its
green spectroscopic line.
Crookes was trained as a chemist. He placed Thallium with the
sulphur group - perhaps in consideration of the residues of
sulphuric acid manufacture where it was discovered.
But Mendeleev soon placed it in Gp III under Indium.

Crookes began radiometer investigations in connection with the
thallium discovery. He was into cathode rays before Thomson.
