RE: power line insulators




I believe that the shape of the power line insulators is chosen to
maintain a high resistance as the insulators accumulated dirt and dust
(which are not as good insulators as the ceramic). Here in southern
California you sometimes see power company workers cleaning the insulators
with a high pressure stream of water (which probably poses its own
interesting problems, because I think that this is done with lines live).
