I have a couple of very old physics texts. Both define N-type and S-type
magnetic polarity by referring to a bar magnet, not to the earth. N-type
is the pole which points to the earth's northern hemisphere. Both mention
that the 'northerly' magnetic pole of the earth has s-type polarity.
