I agree, you want the masses to fall the greatest feasible distance. Do
you do anything to prevent the cars from falling from this greater height?

Gene,
Don't cut the tracks yet! You will at some point want to elevate the
dynamics tracks above table level so that you can accelerate them with a
hanging mass. This requires about 4 - 5' of clear travel for a falling
mass. If you do this, the table length becomes almost irrelevant. The
best way to deal with this is to use table clamps and rods to hold the
track up about 2' above the table.
