Photographing of laser beams

Hi,
I have a question which has pleagued me for many years. When you take
photograph of laser beams (pulse or continuous) in a direction slightly
opposite the propagation direction you get a series of periodic bright
regions in the photograph. The spacing is about 10cm. I have noted
this on many occassion.

Does anybody know why this occurs?

Sandy
