Greetings all,
The global warming "alert" that Jane forwarded was sent out by the Union of
Concerned Scientists to the scientist members of their "Sound Science
Initiative," or SSI as you see it on the alert. This is a network of about
1500 scientists that get regular "briefings" from UCS on various issues
(such as climate change, population, energy, and biodiversity) and
occasional "alerts" when congress or the administration need to hear from
scientists before a major decision is made. Decision makers are under a
barrage of pressure from lobbyists from industry, most of whom
want regulations scaled back and penalties removed. For example, there's a
large group of energy and oil company lobbyists arguing that global warming
is just an "unproven theory," so there's no reason to do anything about it.
Needless to say, decision makers NEED to hear from scientists.
