Re: Force Measured by Acceleration??

I suspect the air-bag sensors really measure acceleration (negative)--a
tutorial on such would be useful (anyone?), but I would think that it is
'stretching' it a bit to say that a simple spring scale measures
acceleration :-)

You can check out the PDF data sheets of the ADKL05, ADXL105 and
ADXL181(in design)
at http://www.analog.com . They are each (different sensitivities and
ranges) a
micromachined accelerometer and associated electronics complete on a
T100
chip. Should be great for physics instrumentationing. The sensing
element is
micromachined out of polysilicon and consists of three parallel
conducting
"plates" with the middle one free to move toward the others against
elastic tethers,
whenever the chip undergoes acceleration. A servo system applies a
restoring
voltage to keep the movable plate centered; the required voltage is used
as the output.
