NO! NO! The car passing example (Indy 500) is NOT a good doppler
example. It is a VERY bad counterproductive one.
Try an experiment. Ask your students to sketch a plot of the
doppler effect for an object passing close to an observer with the
distance from the observer on the x axis and the frequency on the
y axis. You will not get (if you get a graph at all) the step
function (smoothed) that you would measure. You will get something
like a gaussian (especially if you have asked them to listen to cars
going by on the highway). They have confused intensity with frequency.
