Using two sensors to detect direction is aka quadrature encoding. The idea
is you generate two sinuosoidal-ish squarewave-ish signals and the
phase relation between the two gives you direction.

PASCO has a new rotational motion sensor which does allow the computer
interface software to assign a sign to the direction of rotation. It uses
multiple light sensors (2 maybe). The order in which the sensors are
blocked determine the direction of rotation.
