Perhaps this is a pressure node rather than a displacement node.

The screen is placed at L/4 in a tube of length L. In the octave
mode (first overtone) there are pressure nodes at the ends and
center of the tube. The L/4 point is halfway between these nodes.

Perhaps the mesh was at or near L/8.
I think it needs to be between the bottom and the lowest pres. antinode.

Consider the transverse flute. The embouchure is near but not
at the open end, as it needs a little of the pressure for feedback
to deflect the driving airstream. (Even though the left end is plugged,
it behaves as an open end because of the mouth hole).
It is a matter of impedance matching.
