Re: Singing pipes

Yes - we don't use a wire mesh or a newspaper, rather insert a Meeker
burner into the pipe. We have a set of oversized cardboard mailing tubes,
and one large carpet roller which shakes the building when we fire it off!

The wire mesh and the mesh over the Meeker burner seem to be the
mechanism that provides the vibration -- one of the last posts to this
thread discussed that. I like the heated mesh inside the tube a little
better since you get the sound without having to stay over the burner.

My favorite fun thing to do when interacting with students during this
demo is to have a student hold an open paper bag. You start the tube
resonating and then declare that you will pour the sound into the bag.
When the tube gets horizontal, the sound stops and you have the student
quickly close the bag to keep the sound in. While everyone is watching
the bag you ask the student to open it up to let the sound out. When
the student opens the bag you furtively move the tube back to vertical
.... and the sound comes out of the bag!

Cheers,

Rick
