Re: Singing pipes

Greetings everyone! I saw an advertisement a while ago about a
singing pipe. You place a pipe that has a wire mesh inside of it over a
bunsen burner. When you remove the pipe from its heat source, it lets
off a tone/moan.

We have a matched pair of these pipes, made from plexiglass and with
electric heating coils to heat the mesh. I put a collar, made from stiff
paper, on one pipe and by sliding it I can vary the length of the pipe.
This is a great way to demonstrate beats in a large room. Very loud and
very distinct.

In this demo the pipes are individually silenced by blocking the air flow
with another piece of stiff paper. Beats are not heard if either pipe
is blocked.
