Jimmy Carter used to say "nucular", and he had a degree in nuclear
engineering! so maybe its not scientific illiteracy.

It's probably not scientific illiteracy. It's just the Plains (GA) old variety
of illiteracy.

It is a pet peeve of mine as well. A note to the transgressors in government,
the press, etc. might help to retire this mis-pronunciation. It is most
troubling when arms negotiators and "former nuclear engineers" can't pronounce
it correctly.
