.. The danger lies in the rebound phenomenon. If the
capacitors have ever been charged to high voltages and then discharged,
residual polarization with long relaxation time can bring them up to
a good fraction of their former voltages. It is the same phenomenon
seen with old picture tubes.

In the old tubes, the charges were sitting on the inside surface
of the glass bottle, far away from the conductors. It took time for the
electrons to get to where they could shock you.

The take-apart Leyden jar may be similar. Putting the can back in
may not contact all the charges on the glass surface the first time.
