You might want to look at the surveys which list Real World Problem
Solving as the number one skill/knowledge needed for success outside
academia. To be sure, one needs to understand the concepts to successfully
solve problems, but we may want to listen to the folks out there in the
field. We recently had a symposium with industrial chemists who echoed
this very point, citing cross-disciplinary problem solving as the most
important skill for scientists in industry.

In my opinion the entire calculator issue is being blown out of
proportion,
since the important part is the learning of the ideas and concepts, with
problem solving being secondary to the procedure
