Another way to aid the memory:
(O)rdinate => (y)-axis
(a)bscissa => (x)-axis

The order of the first letters has been helpful to me. "A" is before "o" in
the alphabet, and "x" is before "y".

quantity mentioned (the number of prime factors) lies on the
independent variable, or x-axis. (I never could get "ordinate" and
"abscissa" straight.)

If that is the correct interpretation this result is interesting
but unsurprising.

A math teacher taught me a trick here: notice the shape of you mouth as you
say ordinate and abscissa. The latter is a lateral shape, the former a
vertical shape. It finally did it for me.
