Beverly (Trina) Cannon makes many good suggestions for course and
classroom management. Let me add one to her list. Test Insurance.
This is nothing more than a trick to get students to prepare for a test.
The idea is that instead of dealing with a bad test by reteaching, retesting,
extra credit, etc. you get the students to prepare ahead of time. The idea
of insurance is to be prepared. In this case the way the student pay his
insurance premium is by doing extra work before the test. In this way the
student can earn extra credit points before the test that can be applied in
case they are needed. Of course if this really works, by doing the extra
work the student learns the material, does well on the test, and doesn't need
the insurance. Of course very few people ever complain because they missed out
on the disaster for which they had purchased insurance, so everybody wins.
