    I look on the thesis that "the teacher is responsible for the
students' learning" as a zeroth approximation.  The first approximation
is that "the teacher is responsible for the average value of the
students' learning; each student is responsible for his/her deviation
from the average."  I haven't figured out the exact law and don't expect
to, but the first approximation seems adequate for most practical
purposes.
