How about calling g the magnitude of the gravitational field at
the surface of the Earth, or more simply the gravitational field?
The value of doing so is that g will have some meaning which is
connected with Earth rather than with the bodies on which Earth's
gravity acts. After all, the big point to be made is that g is
independent of the nature of the bodies on which it acts.
