what to call little "g"

I've always hedged with;
"g is the intensity of the earth's gravitational field as measured
by the acceleration of free fall, g = 10 m/s^2, downward"
Later, this can be referred to as "the gravitational intensity"
However, students still use the inapropriate " acceleration of
gravity" when using W=mg, or in non-free-fall cases.
