If you use Mr. Leigh's argument then we shouldn't distinguish any force
from any other force since they all give rise to acceleration when combined.

Correctly interpreted. Until a student understands F = ma one need not
distinguish among the kinds of frictional forces. To do so merely obscures.

A student who does not understand a free body diagram has no need for a
variety of engineering approximation formulae that presume understanding.
