When I taught in Wisconsin, we had a 1-semester survey course that
was available to students before they took the calculus-level intro course.
I can't remember anymore whether the prereqs for the calc-level course
included a phrase like "High School physics or Physics 104" (or whatever
our number was for the survey course). That was quite a while ago, and
my vague recollection is that few students took the 1 semester course
prior to the calc-level course. I only taught the survey once, and only
one of the students in that class actually showed up in my calc-level
course. (He did quite well in both classes, as I recall.)
