I could walk 20 feet to respond--but I'll respond to everyone ;)

I think Joe has a point vis-a-vis the THIRD LAW, the propogation problem 
here comes in combo with the 2nd law.  The hand produces a force on the 
rod BUT the rod doesn't accelerate EVEN THOUGH the box doesn't produce a 
force on the rod UNTIL the force has had time to propogate down the rod!
