RE: help in general physics

The problem I have noticed with the mechanical universe is that it leaves
many students bored and incites REM. Even though these video units are
slick and thorough, the act of sitting and watching leaves many students
uninterested, especially if they're particularly bright. I limit the use
of this sort of material to small clips that I could not otherwise

Hi Al-
For the past couple of years I have been a strong advocate of
"The Mechanical Universe" by Olenick et al. (not the other one by Frautschi,
et al) and the high school version of the videos. See my article in TPT
for November 1994. I have had letters of appreciation from students who
had taken the course and then gone on to engineering degrees at large
state universities.
